Introduction to Human Anatomy Lecture 80 Notes: Protists


I think we may leave Prof Fink soon.  For now we’ll stay, a 52 minute lecture on protists. 



Protists are single celled organisms with a nucleus.  Unicellular eukaryotes.  50K species. 

Parasitism is a win lose relationship.  Symbiosis is when both species profit. 

Commensalism is a win neutral relationship.  Whales and barnacles. 

Phylum Protizona is “first animal.”  Heterotrophs. 

Categorize classes based upon motility. 


Ameba: pseudopodia.  Usually found in clean fresh water.  Feed by phagocytosis.  Osmosis is a problem.  Pond water is 100% water while the inside of the ameba is 80% water.  Water flows in.  The contractile vacule collects water then spits it out.  Ocean protazoans don’t have a CV.  There is an ameba that lives in our intesting and causes intestinal dysstentary.  Found where human waste mixes with drinking water.  All beer is pasteurized. 

Typanasome: flagella.  African Sleeping Sickness is caused by a blood parasite.  They feed on RBCs.  A fly carries the disease; its the vector.  The victim becomes weak and anemic. 

Paramecium: cilia, motile hairs.  Very complex single celled organism.  Oral cytostome.  Has a macro and micro nucleus.  Have CVs.  Micronuclei are exchanged for sex, conjugation. 

Plasmodium: non motile, malaria.  All are parasites.  More deaths worldwide than any other parasite.  Has a ring shape.  Enters RBCs, multiplies, the cell lyses, fever and chills experienced.  One mosquito can infect many people.  Victims cannot be blood donors. 

ATPP pseudopod, flagella, cilia, non motile. 

Phylum Diatoms: float in water, algea, photosynthesis.  most abundant organisms in the ocean, plankton.  Look like cut glass, a silicon cell wall.  Form the base of the food chain.  Diatomaceous earth is just ground up diatoms who act as grits or filters. 

Phylum Dinoflagellates: flagella.  Swim towards the surface.  Too many cause fish to die, a red tide.  Some are bioluminescent.  Baja CA in the summer, glowing blue. 

Monera and Protista have single celled organisms.  No nucleus are monera into the bacteria and blue green algae.  Heterotrophic protista are ameba, ciliata, tripanosoma, plasmodium.  Autotrophic protista that are motile are euglena and dinoflagellates.   Non motile protista are diatoms. 


There are 12 ribs, 2 floating ribs

pH = – log [H+]

cation is positive, anion is negative

OIL RIG oxidation is loss, reduction is gain

Evolution: selection drift mutation migration inbreeding

Absorption: Weak acids in the stomach, weak bases in the intestine.

HKBA pH = pK + log base/acid
