Bull Harrier:Nervous Tissue

This lecture is outrageously dense.  The speaker is doing his auctioneer imitation today.  Cost equals 52 minutes.

I found some other videos:

Brain Dissection

Tissue Processing

Two organ systems maintain internal coordination.  Endocrine are responsible for long range comms through chemistry.  Nervous thorough electricity/chemistry from cell to cell.

NS Workings:

Sense.  Processing. Commands.

CNS – brain and spinal column.

PNS – everything else.

afferent/sensory – to the CNS

efferent/motor – from CNS

somatic – muscles, joints, bones, skin

visceral – internal organs

CNS – brain/spine

PNS = Sensory and Motor

Sensory – visceral/somatic

Motor – visceral/somatic

Visceral motor – symp/para

nerve is a bundle of nerve fibers wrapped in CT.

Ganglion is a collection of cell bodies of neurons.

Afferent is toward a center.  Efferent from a center.  Receptors detect stimuli.  effectors respond to commands.

Nerve Cells: excitability, conductivity, secretion

3 Functional classes of neuron

sensory specialized to detect stimuli

interneurons are entirely within the CNS

motor neurons send signals to the effectors

Axonal Transport

all proteins of the neuron are made in the soma.  If the soma was tennis ball sized, the axon would be a 1 mile long hose

neurons are outnumbered 50 to 1 by glial cells.  10 trillion neurons.

Glial Cells of the CNS:

oligodendrites make the myelin sheath

ependymal cells make CSF

microglial are small macrophages

astrocytes form BBB

Glial Cells of the PNS

satellite cells, Schwann cells

Resting Membrane Potential is -70 mV.  Goes postitive, peak, negative, back to RMP.

NTs can be excitatory or inhibitory.

Signal Cessation: diffusion, reuptake, degradation

For anxiety and depression, SSRIs.

Dopa is a inhibitory NT that prevents excessive activity in motor centers.

Mandatory Refusal – when communications are lost, no one is trusted. A breach is assumed.

Gain Band Width Product = Gain x Bandwidth

CARVER is an acronym that stands for Criticality, Accessibility, Recuperability, Vulnerability, Effect and Recognizability.

Wind Speed Beaufort Category How to Judge the Wind
1-3 mph Light Air Smoke drifts. Wind cannot be felt.
4-7 mph Light Breeze Wind felt on face. Leaves rustle. Weather vanes move.
8-12 mph Gentle Breeze Leaves and twigs in motion. Light flags are extended.
13-18 mph Moderate Breeze Wind raises dust and loose papers. Small branches move. Flags flap.
19-24 mph Fresh Breeze Small trees in leaf sway slightly. Wavelets form on ponds and lakes.
25-31 mph Strong Breeze Large branches move. Telephone lines sing.
