“All things are made of atoms.”

The biotech boom is caused by advances in chemistry and instrumentation. Biomolecules are nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. Proteins are formed by polymerization, mer groups are AAs. Amino acids have a -COOH and a -NH2 group. HOOC-RCH-NH2. 3 of the 4 bonds are always specified, except for the R group.

R groups:
Nonpolar – hydrophobic Gly/Ala/Val
Polar – hydrophillic Ser/Thr
R+ – strongly hydrophillic, basic
R- – strongly hydrophillic, acidic Asp/Glu

Our bodies can only make 10 of the 20 AAs. You may exit the carbon cycle.

In alanine, R = CH3. AAs have stereochemistry. Chiral molecules have handedness. If mirror plane, then not chiral. Optically active, rotate polarized light. Clockwise is D, CCW is L. Only L form found in biological AAs. Only D form sugars are metabolized by the body. Both enatiomers, racemic mix.

Thalidomide and Ritalin are both given as racemic mixes. Only one form is effective but the other has sides.

AAs are solids, colorless, covalent, moderately soluble in H2O.

+H3N-CHR-COO- is a zwitterion. That’s an AA in H2O. H3PO4 is pH 3.

Le Chatlier is the restorative force exerted by a chemical system, to minimize perterbations.

H+ up, pH down. We can flood with OH-. Gobble up H+ at the COO- end.
pK = pH + log base/acid. Zwitterions can act as buffers. Titratable R groups are proton active and can accept/decline H+ ions.

Extreme kinetics: the Halifax explosion. To this day, Halifax sends an annual Christmas tree to Boston.

Condensation reactions build chains. Dehydration reactions destroy chains. Making bonds releases energy, breaking bonds costs energy.
